The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has signed a number of documents with the Government of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat aimed at strengthening trade potential, developing financial markets and creating a single window for the country's export-import operations.
Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry said the joint projects with the UN were signed by the heads of the country's ministries of trade and foreign economic relations, finance and economy, and the state customs service.
Turkmenistan is an exporter of natural gas (to China, Russia and Uzbekistan), electricity, oil products, polymers, synthetic gasoline and textiles.
Experts told Daryo that the country's authorities plan to increase the volume of foreign trade turnover to $20.7bn this year. In 2023, the volume of local exports reached $11.4bn.
According to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Turkmenistan plans to finalise the Memorandum on Foreign Trade Regime by mid-2024. The submission of this document is one of the conditions for accession to the WTO.
