South Korean company to deliver high-speed electric trains to Uzbekistan
The South Korean company Hyundai ROTEM is in discussions regarding the potential delivery of six high-speed electric trains to Uzbekistan, as reported by Trend. The matter was deliberated during a meeting between Ambassador Vitaliy Fen of Uzbekistan and the President of Hyundai ROTEM, Lee Yong-bae.
The meeting also served as a platform to explore cooperation opportunities in the transportation sector. The envisaged task of supplying high-speed electric trains aligns with the objectives outlined in the decree issued by the head of Uzbekistan on October 10, 2023. The decree aims to enhance railway transportation infrastructure in the country, including establishing connectivity between Tashkent and historical cities such as Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva. This initiative is expected to improve convenience for both residents and tourists.
The discussion also touched upon Hyundai ROTEM's participation in the upcoming Tashkent International Investment Forum, scheduled for May 2–3. The company plans to send a delegation to the forum to explore investment opportunities in Uzbekistan and discuss potential avenues for collaboration.
Earlier Daryo reported that Uzbekistan government planmed to finalize direct agreements with Hyundai Rotem and Skoda Transportation for the acquisition of a combined total of 36 electric trains. This procurement comprises 6 high-speed trains sourced from Hyundai Rotem, to be funded through a €185 mn loan from the Economic Development and Cooperation Fund of the Republic of Korea (EDCF). Additionally, the remaining 30 electric trains will be procured from Skoda Transportation, with financing facilitated by Czech banks at a fixed interest rate of 5.5% annually for a period of 15 years.
