A digital logistics register is being created for the North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC), which will include information on the infrastructure of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport, the Agency of Transport and Communications of Turkmenistan reports.
The intergovernmental agreement on the creation of the North-South corridor was signed by Russia, Iran and India in 2000. Since then, more than a dozen countries have joined the document.
"The information contained in the register will allow for more efficient formation of logistics routes and supply chains along the North-South corridor, in which Turkmenistan is playing an increasing role." The Register of Infrastructure Facilities will be made publicly available on the website of the Commonwealth Member States Transport Coordination Meeting.
Of the three major routes identified in the ITC development strategy, two pass through Turkmenistan. These are the Trans-Caspian - across the Caspian Sea by sea and river transport from the ports of Astrakhan, Aliya and Makhachkala along the Volga River to Turkmen and Iranian ports. And the eastern one - through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan by road and rail.
The information quotes the opinion of Dmitry Murev, General Director of RZD Logistics, who recently visited the Caspian port. According to him, Turkmenistan's transport infrastructure is ready for the growing international cargo flows in this direction.
Turkmenistan became an official participant in the North-South agreement last year. Steps are being taken to simplify logistics along this route in order to optimise freight traffic.
KTZ Express (Kazakhstan), RZD Logistics (Russia) and JSC Transport and Logistics Centre of Turkmenistan recently signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint venture to develop transport along the corridor.
The parties agreed to combine their competencies to achieve competitive tariffs and "seamless" transport of goods from Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan to Iran, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific countries.
