The International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage (BUNKER) will enter into force for Turkmenistan on 23 April 2024. The Turkmen Sea and River Roads Agency reports that the International Maritime Organisation has approved Turkmenistan's accession to the instrument.
Turkmenistan is washed by the Caspian Sea, which also borders Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia and Kazakhstan.
The Convention was adopted on 23 March 2001 and entered into force on 21 November 2008. The main purpose of the document is to establish a common international standard and procedure for determining liability and providing compensation for bunker fuel pollution.
According to the Convention, bunker fuel is a fuel used for the operation of marine engines. The Convention provides for adequate, prompt and effective compensation to persons who suffer damage as a result of bunker fuel pollution.
More than 100 countries are parties to the convention, including the Caspian littoral states of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran.
