The Athletics Federation of Uzbekistan recently held a press conference to discuss the upcoming BYD - VI Tashkent International Marathon where the number of participating countries was revealed. The event was attended by officials from the National Olympic Committee, the Republican High School of Athletics, the Athletics Federation of Uzbekistan, and the media.
Importance of Public Sports Events
Kamoliddin Usmanov, the deputy chairman of the federation, emphasized the significance of such public sports events. He stated that these events play a crucial role in promoting a healthy lifestyle among the country’s population, particularly the youth.
Event Details
Following Usmanov’s address, Kamoliddin Rozimuhammedov, the general secretary of the federation, presented the organizational process, track, participating countries, prize fund, registration procedure, and other main issues.
The VI Tashkent International Marathon is the only World Athletics Label level event organized in the country. This year, the event is expected to see an expanded geography of participating countries, with skilled runners from 32 countries expected to compete.
Race Categories and Prize Pool
The marathon will feature races in various categories: a full marathon (42 km, 195 meters), a half marathon (21 km), and shorter distances of 3 and 10 km. In addition, “Kids Run” and Nordic walking competitions for children are expected to be organized as part of the event.
One of the highlights of this year’s event is the increased prize pool, which now stands at UZS 720mn ($58,385).
Global Marathon Statistics
Globally, marathon participation reached 1.1mn people in 2018. The average finish time for a marathon is 4 hours and 29 minutes. The fastest countries include Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Spain. The participation growth from 2008 to 2018 was +49.43%.
The BYD - VI Tashkent International Marathon is set to take place on April 21.
