A regional workshop focusing on the global taxonomy of biodiversity expenditures was recently held in Kazakhstan on February 7, drawing participation from various stakeholders in the realm of environmental and biodiversity financing, UNDP in Uzbekistan reported. Representatives from the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change, the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and the BIOFIN Project in Uzbekistan converged at the workshop organized under the BIOFIN Global Program.
The gathering saw over 25 leading national specialists and experts from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan delving into discussions aimed at developing unified approaches to defining the list of public expenditures associated with the protection of natural objects and ecosystems.
Against the backdrop of the adoption of the Global Framework for Biodiversity Conservation, countries committed to enhancing their national strategies, including plans to augment funding for biodiversity conservation. In response, the BIOFIN program has been spearheading the development of a global biodiversity expenditure taxonomy, complementing methodologies for evaluating biodiversity financing from national budgets and formulating national biodiversity financing plans.
The taxonomy aims to facilitate the identification and alignment of expenditures in national budgets with respective national biodiversity priorities, a collaborative effort between BIOFIN teams and national experts.
The workshop served as a platform for knowledge exchange and synergy among technical specialists, particularly in protected areas work, and public finance experts. Participants shared experiences and insights, gaining a deeper understanding of similarities and differences in the functioning and financing of national nature conservation systems in neighboring countries.
During the seminar's second day, the host party, the BIOFIN team in Kazakhstan, along with national partners, organized a visit to the Ile-Alatau State National Natural Park. Here, participants were acquainted with the Visitor Centre's operations, an initiative within the BIOFIN project's implementation in Kazakhstan.
Attendees commended the organization and execution of the workshop, highlighting the importance of such gatherings on a regular basis.
The UNDP Global Programme "Biodiversity Finance Initiative - BIOFIN" stands as a global partnership addressing biodiversity finance comprehensively. Through its innovative methodology, the Initiative enables countries to assess current biodiversity expenditures, determine financing needs in the medium term, and identify suitable financing solutions to bridge national biodiversity financing gaps.
