A recent video circulating on social media has brought attention to a thriving shoe market in Namangan, Uzbekistan. The video showcases shoes being sold for as low as UZS 5,000 ($0.4), a price point that is reportedly unmatched even in China, Daryo journalists went there to inquire about the situation.
The “Yashil” farmer’s market, located in the Davlatabad district of Namangan city, is a hub of activity, especially on Saturdays. The market is known for its wholesale trade in a variety of goods, including agricultural products, clothes, spare parts, household appliances, and furniture.
The Boom in Shoe Sales
On market days, the sale of old items, including shoes, is particularly booming. Shoes are brought in from Tashkent, offering a diverse assortment of boots, shoes, sneakers, and slippers. Both used and almost new shoes are available, catering to a wide range of customer preferences.
Adhamboy Nosirov, a seller at the market, explains that they buy the shoes wholesale, which allows them to cover the fare and still make a profit. He noted that the number of buyers increased sharply after the video about the market spread on social networks. The imported products are running out on two Saturdays, indicating the high demand. Nosirov attributes this situation to the fact that "not everyone has money to buy new shoes".
