In 1920, the permanent population stood at 4.4 mn people. A decade later, in 1930, it saw a modest increase to 4.9 mn. Moving forward to 1940, the population reached 6.6 mn, but by 1950, a slight decline resulted in a figure of 6.2 mn.
The subsequent decades witnessed substantial growth. By 1960, the permanent population surged to 8.4 mn, followed by 11.8 mn in 1970 and 15.8 mn in 1980. Notably, the 1990s marked a significant demographic expansion, reaching 20.2 mn people by 1990.
