Turkmenistan's ambassador to Uzbekistan Shadurdy Meredov visited the Ulugbek National University of Uzbekistan, where more than 300 Turkmen students are currently studying.
The diplomat met with rector Inom Madjidov, vice-rector for international relations Raima Shirinova and vice-rector for scientific affairs and innovations Yagub Ergashov.
The parties agreed to hold an international conference on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the great Turkmen poet Makhtumkuli within the walls of the alma mater, as well as to create a library dedicated to his works in the Faculty of Philology.
The conversation touched on issues such as "staff exchanges, academic mobility, establishing cooperation in scientific research and creating joint laboratories".
Makhtumkuli's legacy is being honoured in Uzbekistan. One of Tashkent's central streets is named in his honour, and a bas-relief of him was installed there in 2017.
There is documentary evidence that the poet studied in Khiva and Bukhara and considered Alisher Navoi his mentor. One of the first editions of his poems was published in Uzbekistan under the title "Divan Khezreti".
Earlier, it was reported that documentary filmmakers from the Turkmen Film Studio were on a business trip to Bukhara to make a film about Makhtumkuli.
