In January-December 2023, 70.4 thousand foreign citizens entered Uzbekistan for business purposes, among which the largest number is Turkmenistan - 46.5 thousand.
Then came citizens of Tajikistan - 14.8 thousand merchants and Afghanistan - 1.9 thousand, the Statistics Agency under the President of Uzbekistan reports.
Citizens of Turkmenistan have been required to obtain entry visas to cross the border since 1999, after Ashgabat decided to withdraw from the visa-free agreement with the CIS.
Turkmenistan shares its longest border with Uzbekistan - 1,700km. Neighbouring countries are interested in expanding cross-border trade.
About 300,000 ethnic Uzbeks live in Turkmenistan and more than 200,000 Turkmen live in Uzbekistan.
