Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, in an interview with the Kabar News Agency, discussed the payback period of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway. He said the project will pay for itself in 35-40 years. The implementation of this project will enable Kyrgyzstan to become a transit state. Japarov emphasised that the project will be financed without the involvement of foreign loans.
Project timeline
The agreement to construct a railway line from China to Uzbekistan was signed in the autumn of 2022, on the margins of the SCO summit. The project was initially planned to be launched in 2023. However, in the autumn of the same year, the Kyrgyz government announced its postponement to 2024.
Project cost and route
The project cost from China to Uzbekistan is estimated at $3 to $5bn. The railway will be approximately 450 km long, with most of the route (about 280 km) passing through the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project is among China’s main transportation policy priorities in the region. The project will involve the construction of more than 50 tunnels and 90 bridges, all within the highest mountains of Kyrgyzstan. The railway will span 454 km, with 280 km passing through Kyrgyzstan. It will have 18 stations and 81 large and medium bridges.
