Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Japarov discussed the country’s irrigation system and water management, in a recent interview with the state agency Kabar, 24.kg reported. He highlighted the challenges faced by farmers due to insufficient water accumulation in the daily and ten-day regulation basins, which have not been cleaned in the past. The republic uses only 1% of the Naryn River for irrigation and drinking water, while 99% goes to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
President Japarov announced that this year, the country is focusing on cleaning these basins and constructing new Basin Storage Reservoirs (BSRs) and Basin Daily Regulations (BDRs) across the country. These BSRs and BDRs primarily benefit Kyrgyzstan’s downstream neighbours, as they help manage disputes overflowing water during the irrigation season. By collecting melt water in BSR and BDR in winter, the river water will fully flow to the neighbours from spring.
Infrastructure development
President Japarov also addressed the issue of flooding in Bishkek, the country’s capital, due to the lack of overhead daily regulation basins. He emphasized that the construction of BSRs could have prevented the flooding and saved the water. This issue is prevalent in every region of the country, and the President stressed the importance of storing water in winter to ensure sufficient supply for the neighbours.
Energy projects and international cooperation
The President cited the construction of the Kambarata-1 hydroelectric power station as an example of infrastructure development. He expressed confidence that the neighbours will benefit from this hydropower plant in the form of water resources. Kyrgyzstan, on the other hand, benefits only from electricity.
