On January 19, another monument to the former president of Kazakhstan - Nursultan Nazarbayev - was removed. In 2023-2024, several significant actions were taken in Kazakhstan related to Nursultan Nazarbayev, the country’s former president:
Annulment of Privileges: In February 2023, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a law annulling many privileges of his predecessor Nursultan Nazarbayev, including lifetime financial support from the state, the right to address the nation and propose ideas to officials, and depriving his immediate family of legal immunity.
Closure of the First President’s Office: In June 2023, the Office of the First President was effectively closed due to a reallocation of funds in the budget away from the office. This was tied to the invalidation of the law “On the First President” that was a result of a constitutional referendum in 2022.
Removal of Monuments: There were reports of statues of Nazarbayev, meant to be monuments to his legacy, being torn down by protesters. A statue toppled during the riots has not been repaired; street signs for Nazarbayev Avenue that were pulled down in Almaty, the country’s largest city, have not been reaffixed.
End of Personality Cult: There are signs that the personality cult around Nazarbayev is over. The capital city, along with its airport and main university were all renamed after him. But since the worst unrest since independence broke out earlier in January 2022, Nazarbayev has been silent and absent from public view.
Power Shift: Tokayev, once a loyalist, has used the crackdown to strip power from his former benefactor and members of Nazarbayev’s family. Some of whom are accused of using the protest mood in the country to unseat Tokayev and seize power
Earlier, it was reported that the former president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, will have his state guards removed, as per the new decree signed by the current president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
