The former president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, will have his state guards removed, as per the new decree signed by the current president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kursiv Media reports.
The State Security Service will no longer provide security for Nazarbayev starting from August 4. However, his personal integrity will be safeguarded. Despite losing state guards, Nazarbayev will receive other privileges, including an apartment, a state cottage, personal bodyguards, a driver, a car, and medical assistance.
This decision is based on the law signed by Nazarbayev himself about his inviolability which was passed in February 2023. The law outlines the status and privileges of Nazarbayev and his relatives. Despite the changes to the statute on the state security service, Nazarbayev will not be excluded from state protection as a former president.
The State Security Service of Kazakhstan is a specialized state body directly under the authority of President Tokayev and reporting to him.
