India's Foreign Ministry says Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat, who served as High Commissioner to Cyprus, has been appointed as India's next Ambassador to Turkmenistan.
Bhagat is a career diplomat and joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1999. Her service record includes stints in Russia, Kazakhstan, Sweden, Turkey and Cyprus. She served as India's first National Coordinator and Joint Secretary for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) from June 2017 to October 2019.
She has been educated in New Delhi and has done her graduation in Political Science(Honours) and followed it with an LLB.
India considers Turkmenistan part of its 'extended neighbourhood' and established diplomatic relations in 1992. The President of India made his first state visit to Turkmenistan in April 2022.
The two countries are involved in the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project, which began in 2015. The project could provide India's growing economy with its first transnational gas pipeline.
Turkmenistan has also expressed a desire to join the North-South International Transport Corridor, initiated by India in 2000, which could reduce the time and cost of transport between the world's major markets.
Experts told Daryo that the inclusion of Turkmenbashi port and the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway line in the project would improve transport links between the regions.
India's main exports to the local market are pharmaceuticals, agricultural products, sugar, meat, electronics, machinery, clothing and tyres. Turkmenistan's main exports to India are fertilisers, inorganic minerals, chemicals and dyes.
