Turkmenistan plans to host the next ministerial meeting of the European Union-Central Asia format this year, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry has announced.
Issues of preparation and organisation were discussed by Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov with Vice-President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas, who visited Ashgabat.
The meeting also discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation in security, digitalisation, water management, transport and education. The sides exchanged views on holding the High Level Investor Forum scheduled for 29-30 January 2024 in Brussels.
Schinas was received by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan. The EU reports that the Vice-President of the European Commission welcomed the country's efforts in the process of accession to the World Trade Organization and congratulated for joining the Global Methane Pledge.
Following the visit, in a briefing, Schinas said: "Turkmenistan is an important partner of the EU in Central Asia. My visit was the opportunity to discuss Global Gateway, the EU’s main investment strategy with partners worldwide. The Global Gateway is about investing in our mutual interests and is ideally suited to Central Asia given that it is already the world’s gateway between East-West."
Such EU projects as "Sustainable Energy Connectivity in Central Asia (SECCA)", "Dialogue and Action for Resourceful Youth in Central Asia (DARYA)", Border Management Programme in Central Asia (BOMCA-10), Central Asia Drug Action Programme (CADAP) are being implemented in Turkmenistan.
