The Taliban has expressed concern over the escalating conflict between Iran and Pakistan, urging both nations to de-escalate tensions and focus on maintaining regional stability, Sputnik reported.
Taliban’s appeal for peace
Abdul-Qahar Balkhi, the spokesperson for the Taliban’s Foreign Ministry, has voiced the movement’s concern over the exchange of strikes on each other’s territory. Balkhi emphasized that with the end of externally imposed conflicts in the region, the focus should now be on maintaining stability and resolving contradictions through diplomatic dialogue.
Escalating conflict
The conflict escalated when Iran launched a missile attack on Jaysh al-Adl, a militant group oper Taliban urged Iran and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions in Pakistan. In response, Pakistan retaliated with its airstrike, supported by Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS), on the Balochistan Liberation Army near the Iranian city of Saravan, located in the Sistan and Balochistan provinces. The strike reportedly resulted in the death of nine Pakistani nationals among the group’s functionaries.
Earlier, Daryo reported on the escalating tensions between Iran and Pakistan due to recent airstrikes by Iran on Pakistani soil. On January 17, Iran launched airstrikes in Pakistan, allegedly targeting bases of the militant group Jaish al-Adl. The strikes resulted in the unfortunate deaths of two children and injuries to three others. Islamabad has labelled this incident as an unprovoked violation of its airspace, leading to serious diplomatic repercussions.
The strikes occurred in the mountainous Balochistan province, a region along the nearly 1,000 km border between Iran and Pakistan. The Iranian strikes reportedly damaged a mosque in Balochistan’s Panjgur district, approximately 50 km inside the border.
Militant group
Jaish al-Adl, also known as the “Army of Justice,” is a Sunni militant group that has been conducting attacks against Iranian border guards since 2013. The group has been involved in bombings and kidnappings of border police. The missile-and-drone attack on Pakistan by Iran marks a significant escalation in the region.
In response, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry issued a strong statement, condemning the airstrikes as a blatant violation of its sovereignty and warning of serious consequences. The ministry emphasized that terrorism is a common threat in the region and requires coordinated action, rather than unilateral measures that could undermine trust and bilateral relations.
