Recent events have escalated tensions between Iran and Pakistan following Iran's airstrikes in Pakistan. These strikes on January 17, which Iran claims were targeting bases of the militant group Jaish al-Adl, resulted in the tragic deaths of two children and injuries to three others, Al Jazeera reported. This incident has been described by Islamabad as an “unprovoked violation” of its airspace, sparking serious diplomatic repercussions.
The attack occurred in the mountainous Balochistan province, a sparsely populated region along the nearly 1,000km long border between Iran and Pakistan. According to reports, the Iranian strikes damaged a mosque in Balochistan's Panjgur district, which is about 50km inside the border. This action by Iran comes amid a series of missile strikes in the region, including attacks in northern Syria and Iraq, as Tehran responds to threats from various militant groups.
Jaish al-Adl, also known as the "Army of Justice," is a Sunni militant group that has been conducting attacks against Iranian border guards since at least 2013. This group has been involved in bombings and kidnappings of border police. The unprecedented nature of the missile-and-drone attack on Pakistan by Iran marks a significant escalation in the region.
In response, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry issued a strong statement, condemning the airstrikes as a blatant violation of its sovereignty and warning of serious consequences. The ministry emphasized that terrorism is a common threat in the region and requires coordinated action, rather than unilateral measures that could undermine trust and bilateral relations.
It is to be noted, that Pakistan has summoned Iranian diplomat to answer for the actions. Prior to the event, Iranian personalities shared on X/formally known as Twitter, on Iran and Pakistan's collaboration on tackling terrorism at the borders.
These developments indicate a complex and volatile situation, with potential implications for regional security and the relationship between Iran and Pakistan.
