The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, and the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, convened for a crucial meeting in Dushanbe on January 16, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.
The high-level talks focused on the pressing matters of bilateral relations, aiming to chart a course for the future collaboration between Tajikistan and the European Union (EU). Discussions spanned a wide range of topics, including political, economic, and humanitarian spheres.
Both parties shared insights on the current agenda of their diplomatic ties, seeking ways to not only strengthen existing cooperation but also explore new avenues for mutual benefit. The meeting reflected a shared commitment to fostering meaningful partnerships in key sectors that contribute to the growth and stability of both regions.
Among the pivotal issues addressed were those concerning regional security, with a particular focus on the evolving situation in Afghanistan. The threat of terrorism and extremism loomed large in the discussions, underlining the shared concern for stability and peace in the broader Central Asian region.
Tajikistan and EU Relations
The relations between Tajikistan and the European Union have steadily evolved since the former's independence in 1991. Serving as the bedrock for this relationship is the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA), which has been in effect since 2010. Not content to rest on past achievements, both parties initiated negotiations on an Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA) at the outset of 2023, signaling a commitment to deepen their ties.
Regionally, Tajikistan is a pivotal partner through the European Union’s Strategy on Central Asia, adopted in June 2019. This strategic framework outlines cooperation objectives and priorities for the EU's engagement in the region. The focus lies on promoting resilience, prosperity, and regional cooperation in Central Asia while upholding EU principles and values such as good governance, human rights, and rules-based regional cooperation.
