The EU announces that a delegation of the European Commission, led by Vice-President Margaritis Schinas, will visit Turkmenistan on 17 January 2024. During the visit he will meet Serdar Berdimuhamedov, President of Turkmenistan, and Rashid Meredov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
"The visit comes ahead of the "Europe - Central Asia Investors Forum" due to take place in Brussels on 29-30 January and is testament to the growing partnership between the EU and the region."
Experts told Daryo that the European Parliament must ratify the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) with Turkmenistan, which was signed in 1998. Bilateral relations are now governed by an interim trade agreement.
The EU hopes to receive Turkmen gas via the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Turkey, which would provide energy security to the continent, which previously depended on Russia.
In 2015, a declaration on energy cooperation between Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and the European Union was signed in Ashgabat. The document highlighted the Trans-Caspian project.
Earlier it was reported that the President of Turkmenistan will visit the EU headquarters in Brussels (Belgium) at the invitation of the President of the European Council Charles Michel.
