In the latest release of the PowerIndex, evaluating the world's most formidable armies in 2024, Uzbekistan experienced a decline in its ranking, slipping from the 62nd position to 65th. This places Uzbekistan in the second position among the Central Asian countries, with Kazakhstan securing the lead at the 58th position.
The PowerIndex ranking for 2024 reveals Kazakhstan as the strongest military force in Central Asia, holding the 58th position globally. Following suit are Turkmenistan at 83rd, Kyrgyzstan at 100th, and Tajikistan at 107th.
As per the PowerIndex assessment, Uzbekistan's defense budget stands at $796.8mn. The country maintains a military personnel strength of 68,000, with 48,000 actively serving.
Uzbekistan's armed forces boast 115 combat-ready aircraft, including 35 fighters. The inventory includes 162 combat-ready tanks and an extensive fleet of 3,300 military vehicles. This snapshot offers an overview of Uzbekistan's military capabilities in the context of the global PowerIndex ranking for the year 2024.
Kazakhstan’s military budget has decreased by almost one and a half times since 2019 and amounted to $1.1bn, or 517 billion tenge. This follows from data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). In 2019, Kazakhstan’s military budget was $1.8bn, in 2020 – $1.5bn, in 2021 – $1.6bn and in 2022 – $1.1bn.
