Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are in talks to (continue) swap gas supplies (on a reimbursable basis) through Iran, the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) reports. The halt in the gas swap is temporary, the IRNA agency quoted NIGC as saying. The commercial terms of the deal are currently being negotiated.
Local experts told Daryo that these supplies have been running since early 2022 under a trilateral agreement. Under the open-ended contract, Iran can receive up to 3.0-4.0bn cubic metres of gas per year from Serakhs, Turkmenistan, for delivery to Astara, Azerbaijan.
These transit services help to supply natural gas to Iranian provinces such as Rezavi, North and South Khorasan, Golestan and Semnan, which are far from national gas resources.
Azerbaijan's State Statistics Committee reports that trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan totalled $738.9mn in January-November 2023, up 73% year-on-year.
