Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov received newly appointed Turkish Ambassador Ahmet Demirok, who presented his credentials, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports. During the meeting, it was emphasised that the two countries' relations "are of a long-term strategic nature."
"I firmly believe that there are good opportunities for further development of relations between our countries in political-diplomatic, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian spheres, and that they will be strengthened in the future," Berdimuhamedov said.
The Turkish diplomat had previously headed his country's diplomatic mission in Eritrea since 15 August 2021.
Turkey is one of Turkmenistan's largest trading partners. About 600 Turkish companies operating in trade, construction, energy, transport, communications and textiles are registered in the local market.
According to Turkey's trade ministry, construction projects in the Central Asian country exceeded $50.8bn between 1972 and July 2023. Trade turnover between Turkey and Turkmenistan is projected to reach $3.0bn in 2023, up from $2.06bn a year earlier.
Turkey is actively lobbying for Turkmen gas to enter the European market.
Experts told Daryo that a 300km pipeline across the Caspian Sea could optimally connect Turkmenistan to the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), through which Azerbaijan already supplies gas to Europe.
"This project could significantly increase the competitiveness of the South Gas Company and make a significant contribution to the creation of a transnational gas hub in Thrace (Turkey)."
