Uzbekistan is making significant strides in its green energy sector, with plans to launch an additional 3.5GW of renewable energy capacity. This move aligns with the global trend towards sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources, President's Press Service reports.
Foreign investments and economic diversification
In 2023, Uzbekistan disbursed more than $22bn of foreign investments, marking a 1.8 times increase from the previous year. Shavkat Mirziyoyev, has emphasized the need to further increase investments in 2024, particularly in key sectors such as the electrical industry, mechanical engineering, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and leather.
Mirziyoyev also highlighted the importance of utilizing Free Economic Zones (FEZs) and industrial zones, as well as diversifying the economy. These strategies aim to strengthen the country’s economic resilience and promote sustainable growth.
Green energy initiatives
In 2023, seven solar and wind power plants with a total capacity of 2,600MW were launched, six of which were operational within the last week. For 2024, the country plans to increase the total capacity of photovoltaic power plants to 2.6GW and wind farms to 900MW. Additionally, the commissioning of 400MW energy storage systems is on the agenda.
In collaboration with companies from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, China, France, and Switzerland, 12 new power plants are currently under construction. In total, 28 projects in the field of green energy are under development.
Power grids and infrastructure development
The President has instructed the development of a concept for power grid modernization to ensure their stable operation. This includes measures for infrastructure construction, the introduction of safety systems, and digital control (SCADA).
