In a recent interview with Egemen Qazaqstan, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan firmly dismissed rumors about potential changes to the country’s Constitution to allow his re-election, Kazpravda.kz reports.
“This (rumors about re-election) is disinformation. I am convinced that arbitrary changes to the Constitution, especially on such a fundamental issue, is no longer possible,” Tokayev stated.
Inviolable norms
The President further emphasized the inviolability of the Constitution’s provision on a single presidential term.
“This norm is as inviolable as the norms on independence, unitarity, territorial integrity and the form of government of our state,” he added.
Current constitutional provisions
As per the current Constitution of Kazakhstan, the president can be elected once, with the term limited to seven years. This provision was part of the amendments unanimously supported by the Kazakh parliament and signed into law by President Tokayev.
President Tokayev’s stance
President Tokayev’s stance on the matter aligns with his previous actions and statements. He has been known for his commitment to the rule of law and constitutional order. His refusal to alter the Constitution for personal gain is a testament to his dedication to democratic principles and the stability of the nation.
