Samarkand International Airport, located in Uzbekistan recently ranked among the top five airports in Europe for passenger flow growth by the Airports Council International (ACI) Europe.
Rapid growth in passenger traffic
In October, Samarkand Airport secured 4th place in the category of regional and small airports with a passenger flow of 100,000 to 1 mn per year. This represents a remarkable growth of 139% compared to October 2019. Over 10 months, the airport climbed to 3rd place, with a growth rate of 103.7% compared to the same period in 2019.
Expansion of flight operations
Since the beginning of the year, Samarkand Airport has operated 7 domestic and 20 international flights. For the first time, flights to Tel Aviv, Urumqi, Jeddah, Kuwait, Izmir, Mineralnye Vody, Ufa, Samara, and Urganch cities were introduced.
Future prospects
Independent research by Lufthansa Consulting forecasts an increase in annual passenger traffic from 480,000 to 2 mn. Upon completion, the number of regular flights will increase from 40 to 120 per week, with a total of 24 new aircraft parking spaces available.
This rapid growth of Samarkand International Airport signifies its entrance into the field of global competition. It also highlights the potential of regional airports to contribute significantly to the aviation industry.
