Turkmenistan plans to launch a second space communications satellite to improve the quality of telecoms services. Batyr Annaev, Deputy Director General of the Transport and Communications Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, said.
"Turkmenistan's further steps include strengthening innovation and technology, transport and logistics infrastructure, integration of banking solutions, launching the second national communications satellite to improve the quality of telecommunications services."
The delegation of Turkmenistan participated in the meeting of ministers of landlocked developing countries held in Yerevan, Armenia.
Annayev also noted that the pandemic has provided an impetus for accelerated digitisation in Turkmenistan. This is creating the conditions for remote access to health care, education and basic goods and services.
Particular attention is being paid to increasing the transit capacity of Internet traffic, which is reflected in a tenfold increase in the total capacity of purchased international communication channels over the past five years. Currently, the number of Internet users in Turkmenistan exceeds 3.0mn, which is more than 20% higher than the level in 2019.
Experts told Daryo that the Franco-Italian Thales Alenia Space is offering its services to build the satellite. This company built TürkmenÄlem 52oE, the first national satellite, which was launched in 2015 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA.
The spacecraft is also expected to provide environmental monitoring of oil fields, pipeline corridors and refineries, including oil spill detection.
Satellite imagery will increase the efficiency of monitoring the progress of transport infrastructure construction and the environmental condition not only of the land, but also of the Caspian shelf.
