On December 16-17, 2023, a delegation of Turkmenistan headed by the Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov conducted a working visit to Herat province, Afghanistan.
Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry reports that "the parties discussed the current stage of implementation of the projects, such as Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline, the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) high-voltage power transmission line, and the expansion of Afghanistan's railway infrastructure."
The Turkmenistan delegation met with a number of Afghan officials: Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, Minister of Mining Industry Shahabutdin Delawar and Minister of Industry and Trade Nuretdin Azizi.
Experts told Daryo that a strategically important project for both countries is the TAPI gas pipeline, along which road infrastructure and an electricity grid are planned.
Construction of the gas pipeline, with an annual capacity of 33bn cubic metres of gas, began in December 2015. During this period, the Turkmen side laid a linear pipeline to the Afghan border and developed a source - the super-giant Galkynysh gas field.
TAPI on Afghan territory will be more than 800km long and will cover the provinces of Herat, Farah, Nimroz, Helmand and Kandahar.
The Islamic Emirate recently agreed to pay for the TAPI project on its territory. A spokesman for the country's Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, Homayoun Afghan, said.
