The Deputy Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan, Bobur Usmanov, engaged in a virtual meeting with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Galuzin, on December 11, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan reported. The discussions focused on evaluating the current state of affairs and exploring future opportunities for the development of bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
One of the key agenda items was the review and implementation of agreements established during the visit of the President of Uzbekistan to Russia from October 5-7, 2023. Both sides expressed their commitment to translating these agreements into tangible actions that will contribute to the enhancement of economic, political, and cultural ties.
The strategic significance of the bilateral relationship between Russia and Uzbekistan was highlighted during the meeting. Historically close ties have been shaped by economic considerations and geopolitical interests, with Uzbekistan's strategic location in Central Asia being particularly noteworthy. Sharing borders with all Central Asian states—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan—and Afghanistan, as well as its control over a substantial part of the agriculturally rich Fergana Valley, positions Uzbekistan as a crucial player in the region.
Despite shifts in Russia's trade and economic landscape following the Ukraine conflict, diplomatic relations between Moscow and Tashkent have witnessed positive momentum. This positive trajectory is evident in the growing dynamics of trade, investment, and people-to-people ties.
Recently, Daryo highlighted recent reports from Uzbekistan which indicated a notable surge in investments during the first nine months of the year, with a total of UZS 226.6 trillion ($18.3bn) in fixed capital flowing into the country. Russia has secured the second position in contributing to this economic influx, accounting for 15.9%. This statistic underscores the strength and resilience of the partnership between the two nations, reflecting their commitment to mutual prosperity and cooperation.
