Uzbekistan-EU virtual meeting addresses Afghan security challenges

Uzbekistan-EU virtual meeting addresses Afghan security challenges

Ismatulla Irgashev, the Special Representative of the President of Uzbekistan for Afghanistan, engaged in a virtual meeting with Tomas Niklasson, the Special Envoy of the European Union for Afghanistan. The meeting, held on December 12, aimed to explore avenues of collaboration and coordination between Uzbekistan and the European Union, with a primary focus on regional security and the evolving situation in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan reported.

The discussions between Irgashev and Niklasson encompassed a broad spectrum of issues related to multilateral cooperation. Of particular concern was the shared commitment to bolster regional security, given the ongoing complexities in Afghanistan. Both parties acknowledged the pressing need for international cooperation to address the challenges posed by the current situation in Afghanistan.

A central theme of the conversation revolved around the indispensable role of the United Nations in facilitating the resolution of the Afghan conflict and the imperative of coordinating global efforts towards this goal. The representatives underscored the importance of a unified stance from the international community, emphasizing the need for a consolidated position on the new authorities in Afghanistan.

The acute social and humanitarian crisis unfolding in Afghanistan was a focal point during the dialogue. Both sides recognized that addressing this crisis requires a united and concerted effort on the part of the global community. The inability to establish a consolidated position regarding the new Afghan authorities, they concurred, would impede progress in resolving the social and humanitarian challenges, hindering the prospects of attaining lasting peace and stability in the country.

The meeting between Ismatulla Irgashev and Tomas Niklasson reflects the shared commitment of Uzbekistan and the European Union to contribute actively to the international efforts aimed at stabilizing Afghanistan.

The European Union backs Uzbekistan's reform agenda by providing both technical and financial aid. Consistently, the EU maintains active communication with Uzbekistan authorities across a spectrum of domains, encompassing regional collaboration, security, human rights, media, environmental and climate issues, the transition to a green economy, digitalization, good governance, and matters of global significance.
