The Oliy Majlis Human Rights representative has issued a response concerning the UN report regarding Dauletmurat Tajimuratov's treatment while imprisoned. As per the UN's published report, independent experts expressed deep concern about Tajimuratov's situation, asserting he was being threatened, insulted, and exposed to inhumane treatment during his incarceration.
The Ombudsperson's statement revealed that, following their visit to investigative detention center No. 11 in Urganch, they examined the conditions of the detainees, including meeting with Tajimuratov. During this meeting, Tajimuratov denied any abuse or coercion during the investigation process or while in detention. He had no objections to the quality of food and other detention conditions.
Tajimuratov also confirmed that he had access to a lawyer and had no issues meeting family members or receiving items while in custody. The Human Rights representative further highlighted the visits where Tajimuratov was met during his detention in Zangiota and later during his prison sentence in Navoi.
While he expressed dissatisfaction with the court's judgment against him, Tajimuratov explicitly denied any torture or mistreatment during his time in detention. Additionally, the Oliy Majlis urged experts, international organizations, and media to base their statements on factual and verified information.
UN experts have expressed serious concern about the unjust detainment of Uzbek human rights advocate Dauletmurat Tajimuratov, highlighting that he faces mistreatment and harassment in prison.
As per the experts, Tajimuratov encountered threats and physical assault while in detention. His arrest, reportedly violent, took place on July 1, 2022, during a peaceful protest in Nukus. The demonstration aimed to defend Karakalpakstan's autonomy as an independent republic and the rights of the Karakalpak minority in Uzbekistan. Law enforcement allegedly used water cannons, rubber bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas to disperse the protesters.
Tajimuratov faced charges on January 31, 2023, and was handed a 16-year prison sentence. The charges included allegations of attempting to seize power or overthrow the constitutional order, money laundering, organizing violent riots, and distributing materials that threaten public safety. Despite an appeal, his sentence stood. However, reports indicate that the sentences of 22 other Karakalpak protesters were favorably reconsidered.
