Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov expressed his endorsement of the proposal to alter the national flag in an interview with the "Kabar" national agency. Japarov highlighted the prevailing public sentiment associating the current flag with a sunflower and the belief that this symbolic resemblance may hinder the country's growth.
He acknowledged instances where foreign visitors thought the flag's elements meant the abundance of sunflowers in the country. Reflecting on Kyrgyzstan's post-independence history, Japarov recognized a reliance on the external world and concluded that the time had come to reconsider the flag's design, a practice frequently observed in many countries worldwide where modifications have been made to flag elements.
The president addressed the parliamentary initiative, emphasizing that the proposed changes did not intend to alter the flag's fundamental concept. The focus of the proposal was primarily on modifying the sun's rays to eliminate any resemblance to sunflowers. He candidly admitted that he was initially unsatisfied with the proposed modification, perceiving it as somewhat flawed, with the sun's rays resembling thorns. However, he disclosed that, after consultations with experts, the issue had been rectified, and the revised version genuinely resembled the sun's rays.
"From now on, it will be as if the sun is shining and smiling for us. I am far from any beliefs and superstitions. But I still hope that we will be a developed and independent country from now on," the president said.
