On the occasion of International Snow Leopard Day, observed on October 23, several environmental conservation groups have jointly petitioned Kyrgyzstan's President, Sadyr Japarov, to designate the snow leopard as the country's national animal.
This request garnered the support of various organizations, including the Global Program for the Conservation of the Snow Leopard and its Ecosystems, the Snow Leopard Foundation in Kyrgyzstan, the Public Foundation "Ilbirs," and the Kyrgyz branch of the German Conservation Union.
The appeal underscores the paramount significance of safeguarding the snow leopard and its natural habitat, expressing a readiness for collaborative efforts in this endeavor. Drawing inspiration from the successful practice of other nations such as India, the United States, and China, where national animals have evolved into cultural symbols, sources of pride, and internationally recognized icons, this initiative gains greater relevance.
Designating the snow leopard as Kyrgyzstan's national animal would serve as a catalyst for strengthening initiatives aimed at preserving the biodiversity of the highland ecosystem. It would also contribute to the growth of ecotourism and reinforce Kyrgyzstan's reputation as a champion of environmental conservation and the protection of biodiversity.
These environmental organizations are hopeful that President Japarov will consider their plea and decide in favor of the snow leopard.
