Mirlan Samiykojo, a member of Kyrgyzstan's Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament), has voiced his opposition to the proposal to alter the country's flag. This stance was expressed during a legislative session, 24.kg reports. The politician pointed out that there is strong public opposition on social media to changing the national flag.
"Let's do something else. Let's not touch the flag. The symbol of the state, which has been living for 30 years, has rays of the sun. Signs of fire, flames. If we change the rays of the sun, which is considered a sunflower, it will turn into a burdock. The people will not forgive us if we deal with the flag when there are more important things to do," said the deputy.
Additionally, Samiykojo offered to provide a historical account of when the state symbol was originally adopted and its significance. However, Speaker Nurlanbek Shakiyev cited his recent discussion with the flag's authors, who expressed dissatisfaction with the current design, claiming it deviated from its original appearance. They aimed to restore it to its authentic form, with no substantial changes.
Samiykojo remained unconvinced and criticized those who likened the sun's rays to sunflowers, describing them as "sunflowers" themselves. The proposal to modify the sun rays on the flag had been previously debated in the Kyrgyzstan Parliament, initiated by Speaker Nurlanbek Shakiyev and deputy Ulan Primov, who argued that the wavy sun rays resembled sunflowers.
