The United Nations (UN) has extended its willingness to support Kyrgyzstan in the implementation of projects aimed at ensuring seismic safety. This commitment was affirmed during a meeting between the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Akylbek Japarov, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Kyrgyzstan, Antje Grawe. The discussions revolved around addressing the seismic risks faced by the country and minimizing potential catastrophic consequences.
Chairman Akylbek Japarov underscored the significance of seismic safety, particularly in regions prone to earthquakes. He emphasized that the protection and safety of Kyrgyz citizens are of paramount importance to the government. To this end, the state has intensified measures to assess the earthquake resistance of buildings and structures. Additionally, a state commission has been actively working in this direction.
However, the Chairman acknowledged the need for a comprehensive approach to the issue, focusing on the systematic renewal of the construction sector. This renewal would involve the adoption of advanced construction technologies, research on seismic loads and pre-design surveys, and improvements to the existing regulatory and technical framework.
Antje Grawe, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, expressed the UN's readiness to collaborate with Kyrgyzstan in implementing projects aimed at enhancing the country's seismological safety. She highlighted that the UN's efforts in this area would primarily focus on three key aspects:
Sustainable Housing: The UN intends to contribute to the construction of sustainable housing that can withstand seismic activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents.
Urban Planning: Efforts will be made to incorporate earthquake-resilient urban planning and the development of erected buildings to mitigate potential risks.
Emergency Response: The UN structures will work on enhancing emergency response mechanisms to effectively address and manage situations arising from seismic events.
The United Nations' offer to assist Kyrgyzstan in seismic safety projects reflects the international community's commitment to supporting countries vulnerable to seismic risks.
