At the 'Fergana' of Uzbekistan, border customs post, located on the border with Kyrgyzstan, an attempt to smuggle 83 Central Asian steppe turtles, which are included in the Red Book, was intercepted, as reported by the press service of the Customs Committee.
Customs post personnel, in cooperation with border guards, conducted a thorough inspection of a Damas vehicle. Inside the vehicle, containers were discovered, holding the turtles without proper documentation and in violation of animal transportation regulations.
The turtles were examined by specialists from the Fergana Zoo, who will temporarily care for them until a court decision is made. Unfortunately, five of the turtles suffered injuries due to improper transportation and required veterinary assistance.
It's important to note that the Central Asian steppe turtle is classified under Appendix II of the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) and holds a 'vulnerable species' status in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
