Uzbekistan is considering a ban on the import of single-use plastic products in areas housing cultural heritage sites, as part of a new project under discussion.
This would encompass items such as cups, tubes, ice cream sticks, cotton swabs, packaging film, and certain types of polyethylene bags, known to have a more prolonged environmental impact compared to other waste materials.
The proposal aims to restrict the import, sale, and production of single-use plastic items, excluding those made from natural organic polymers, within the territories designated for nature conservation, recreation, and locations hosting cultural heritage sites.
Penalties for non-compliance are specified as follows:
- Individuals may incur fines ranging from 2 to 5 CBV equivalent to UZS 660,000 to 1,650,000 ($53,99 -$134,97). For repeat offenses, fines could be increased to 20 to 25 CBV - UZS 6,600,000 to 8,250,000 ($539-$674).
- Public officials may face fines ranging from 5 to 10 CBV - UZS 1,650,000 to 3,300,000 ($134,97 -269). For repeated violations, fines may escalate to 25 to 30 CBV - UZS 8,250,000 to 9,900,000 ($674 - $809) .
The list of banned single-use plastic items for import, sale, and production will be determined by the Cabinet of Ministers.
