The Ministry of Agriculture's Plant Quarantine and Protection Agency has acquired eight specially equipped Toyota Hilux vehicles to enhance its efforts in combatting locust infestations within the republic, according to a statement from the press office of Ministry of Agriculture.
Locusts pose a severe threat to crops, resulting in reduced yields and quality, as well as jeopardizing food security for the population. Furthermore, locust invasions have detrimental impacts on the income of farmers directly involved in agriculture.
Prompt action against locust infestations is essential to prevent harm to agricultural crops, grazing lands, and to minimize the adverse effects of locust control measures on human health and the environment.
The provided Toyota Hilux pickups have been adapted to accommodate sprayers for locust control operations. These treatments will utilize the Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) spraying technique, which minimizes environmental impact. ULV has become an international standard for combating locusts, with nearly all locust control efforts conducted under the guidance of the FAO using this method.
The ULV technique creates a homogeneous insecticide cloud, with approximately 80% of the droplets ranging from 50 to 150 micrometers in diameter. According to FAO data, this droplet size is optimal for effective locust control, ensuring both optimal density and uniform coverage of treated areas.
The provided pickups are also equipped with all the necessary technical capabilities for traversing remote and challenging terrains, which proves advantageous during locust surveys in various regions of Uzbekistan.
