On the occasion of Turkmenistan's Independence Day (27 September), President Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed a decree pardoning 1,180 convicted citizens, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
The document was signed at an enlarged government meeting. "The head of Turkmenistan wished the released citizens to work hard, contribute to the large-scale work carried out in the country, sincerely serve our Motherland and live reaping the fruits of conscientious labour."
The head of state ordered Secretary of the State Security Council, Defence Minister Begench Gundogdiyev to carry out the necessary work so that "the pardoned citizens would be at home with their families as soon as possible".
The local administration was instructed to ensure their employment. In Turkmenistan, such actions are usually held on the eve of memorable dates, including Muslim holidays.
