On September 19, during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of the Republic of Uzbekistan met with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The primary focus of this meeting centered on the progress and measures undertaken to facilitate Uzbekistan's early accession to the World Trade Organization, a significant step in the country's medium and long-term development objectives. President Mirziyoyev highlighted the strategic importance of Uzbekistan's accession to the WTO, aligning it with the nation's broader developmental goals.
During the meeting, President Mirziyoyev emphasized the necessity of thorough preparations, including discussions on the upcoming meeting of the working group dedicated to Uzbekistan's accession to the WTO. Furthermore, he underscored the importance of enhancing the capacity and expertise of specialists engaged in this complex process.
In response, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the WTO, commended Uzbekistan's efforts and dedication towards becoming a member of the organization. She expressed her confidence in Uzbekistan's ability to achieve this goal in the near future and assured that the WTO Secretariat is fully supportive of Uzbekistan's accession process.
As the meeting concluded, both parties reached a consensus on accelerating the preparations for the upcoming meeting of the Working Group. Additionally, they discussed the imperative need to enhance the qualifications of specialists involved in the accession process and to align Uzbekistan's legislation with the agreements and regulations of the World Trade Organization.
Earlier Daryo reported that the journey to WTO membership might be lengthy and challenging. However, Dr. Lawrence (Rui) Dang, an economist and part-time advisor to the European Union, emphasized in an interview with a Daryo correspondent that Uzbekistan could reap substantial benefits. These advantages have the potential to lead to transformations in diverse areas, including trade alliances and the creation of job prospects for young people.
