On September 19, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of the Republic of Uzbekistan met with Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), as part of the broader discussions during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, held in New York, presidential press service reported.
The discussions primarily revolved around the future prospects for expanding Uzbekistan's cooperation with the United Nations, particularly focusing on the implementation of national objectives and goals related to sustainable development.
President Mirziyoyev and Secretary-General Guterres expressed great satisfaction with the unprecedented level of cooperation that has been achieved between Uzbekistan and the United Nations in recent years. Currently, around 140 programs and projects are being successfully carried out as part of this partnership. Uzbekistan's proactive role in the UN is evident in the adoption of six resolutions by the UN General Assembly at Uzbekistan's initiative. Furthermore, a special trust fund has been established to provide social support to the population of the Aral Bay region.
Uzbekistan's active engagement with various prestigious UN bodies, as well as its active participation in their activities, was also highlighted during the meeting. The leaders discussed how major international events are being jointly organized to address pressing global issues, including food security, tourism development, poverty alleviation, and climate change.
António Guterres praised President Mirziyoyev's address at the 78th session of the General Assembly and expressed his support for the comprehensive reform program being implemented in Uzbekistan. He acknowledged the significance of Uzbekistan's leader in proposing initiatives and solutions for current global and regional challenges.
Secretary-General Guterres also acknowledged the ambitious goals and objectives outlined in Uzbekistan's new "Uzbekistan-2030" reform strategy, emphasizing their alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN. He conveyed the readiness of the UN and all its institutions to provide support in the effective implementation of this strategic document.
Both leaders agreed to work on the development of a "roadmap" that will outline the priority areas for further deepening the extensive partnership between Uzbekistan and the United Nations.
Earlier Daryo reported that at the Sustainable Development Goals summit in New York, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the need for a "worldwide rescue strategy."
