In a commanding address to the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, shed light on a global crisis of confidence, voiced concerns over growing geopolitical tensions, and underscored his commitment to a "New Uzbekistan."
"Today’s session of the United Nations General Assembly is taking place in the context of fundamental changes in the system of international relations,"
President Mirziyoyev began. He lamented the present "global crisis of confidence" and noted increased deviations from international law and the resultant tensions.
Highlighting the disruptive effects of geopolitical contradictions, he stressed,
"The geopolitical contradictions are creating new obstacles to the free flow of trade, investment, and innovation."
Mr. Mirziyoyev expressed concern about a diminishing mutual dialogue even on pressing global issues like climate change, hunger, and inequality, emphasizing,
"In such a complex situation, the idea of preserving the spirit of practical cooperation and interaction, placing common interests above existing conflicts, and strengthening unity among countries is becoming more relevant than ever."
Speaking of Uzbekistan's contributions to global cooperation, President Mirziyoyev reminded the Assembly of the “Samarkand Solidarity Initiative” launched last year, targeting common security and development.
"Our main goal is to comprehensively understand the responsibility for the present and future of our countries and peoples,"
he noted.
Delving into domestic achievements, he detailed Uzbekistan's pursuit of democratic reforms and highlighted the recent nationwide referendum on the renewed Constitution.
"More than 90 percent of the voters in the referendum supported this truly popular Constitution,"
he proudly announced. This approval, according to him, has made their reforms "irreversible."
President Mirziyoyev reaffirmed Uzbekistan's commitment to universal principles of equality, human rights, freedom of speech, and conscience, revealing,
"It is on this legal basis that we have adopted the Development Strategy ‘Uzbekistan – 2030’."
This strategy, he emphasized, aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and Uzbekistan is devoted to fulfilling its commitments.
Shedding light on Uzbekistan's economic achievements, President Mirziyoyev declared,
"Over the past six years, the gross domestic product has grown over 1.5 times."
He announced ambitious plans to double this figure by 2030 and expressed aspirations for Uzbekistan to become a full member of the World Trade Organization soon.
Speaking of the impact of reforms on citizens' lives, he added,
"Since 2017, poverty in our country has been halved thanks to the policies aimed at improving the living standards of our people."
Mirziyoyev revealed ambitious goals to further reduce poverty to 7 percent by 2030 and significantly boost water supply, healthcare, education, and other essential services for the population.
In closing, he expressed support for the UN Secretary-General's initiative - Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection and proposed to host the World Conference “Social Protection: the Path towards Development” in 2024 under the United Nations' auspices.
