Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, speaking at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, said that reducing methane emissions into the atmosphere is a priority, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
According to him, the country is "prioritising nationwide activities to reduce and eradicate the negative effects of methane emissions into the atmosphere".
Turkmenistan adopted a number of relevant national programmes after the country joined the Paris Climate Agreement in 2017.
"We are primarily discussing a gradual shift towards implementing and utilising contemporary technologies that are environmentally sustainable and resource-efficient, particularly in the fields of energy, industry and transportation". Berdimuhamedov welcomed the efforts of the world community to realise the Global Methane Pledge.
"We rely on substantial collaboration and specific aid from UN specialised bodies, member states, and other relevant partners."
Turkmenistan recently approved a Roadmap for the development of international co-operation aimed at exploring Turkmenistan's accession to the Global Methane Pledge. "We will send this document to the Organisation's Secretariat in the near future."
Turkmenistan is a significant natural energy provider in the region. China, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan purchase gas from Turkmenistan.
Experts told Daryo that the leaks primarily result from oil and gas pipeline deterioration and the release of undesired methane gas, which is produced alongside oil, into the atmosphere.
Local authorities in the gas and petroleum industry report that they are taking appropriate measures to maximise the use of associated petroleum gas and minimise natural gas losses during extraction, transport, storage and processing.
