President Tokayev calls for global protection of holy books and interfaith dialogue in UN address

President Tokayev calls for global protection of holy books and interfaith dialogue in UN address

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan has voiced his nation's deep concern regarding recent acts of profound disrespect towards holy books during his address at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The president emphasized the need for legal protection against vandalism for all holy books, including the Quran, while highlighting the importance of interreligious dialogue and mutual respect in fostering a culture of peace.

In his impassioned speech, President Tokayev underscored the idea that true peace extends beyond the mere absence of armed conflict.

"The search for peace is not just about the banning of weapons or the signing of declarations. Interreligious and interfaith dialogue plays a key role in fostering a culture of peace," he stated.

The president expressed deep concern about recent acts of disrespect towards holy books, deeming them "barbaric" and unacceptable as expressions of freedom, free speech, and democracy.

President Tokayev went on to stress the need for legal safeguards to protect holy books from vandalism, regardless of the religion they represent. This declaration is particularly significant in a world where religious diversity is a cherished aspect of society.

"A culture of peace can only be based on the principles of unity in diversity and mutual respect," President Tokayev affirmed.

He proudly highlighted the essential role played by the Congress of the Leaders of World Religions, based in Astana, in promoting interfaith harmony and peace. Kazakhstan, he stated, is a nation that seeks peaceful solutions to international issues while firmly upholding its principles of independence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.

The President concluded by reaffirming Kazakhstan's commitment to cooperation with its major allies on all strategic issues. His impassioned plea for the protection of holy books and promotion of interfaith dialogue serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of respect, tolerance, and unity in building a more peaceful world.
