The most important direction of Turkmenistan's activity on realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is maximum assistance of the UN in solving the food problem.
Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said this in his speech at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
According to him, "the COVID-19 pandemic, along with other unfavourable factors, has exposed the vulnerability of those states where this problem has not been solved, where the population does not receive nutritious food".
On this basis, Turkmenistan is taking the initiative to convene a major international forum on food security under the auspices of the United Nations, in cooperation with the World Food Programme, the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Children's Fund.
Berdimuhamedov expressed readiness to provide conditions for holding such an event in the capital of Turkmenistan within the agreed timeframe.
"There is a need for unity, principle and determination in considering issues related to access of states and regions to food resources, guarantees of full nutrition as an inalienable right of any human being, a key factor of health and normal physical development, first of all, of children."
During the pandemic, there were considerable disturbances to the transport and logistics of food supplies in the global market. Moreover, acute issues of climate change and water scarcity, which are vital for nutrition, exist in Central Asia, for instance.
At present, according to experts, Turkmenistan is prioritising the launch of its second national space satellite, "Türkmen Älem 52°E". This is especially crucial for enhancing efforts towards the development of a land cadastre within the nation, hence increasing land productivity and bolstering food security.
