Kyrgyzstan has officially announced its candidacy for non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027-2028 term. The announcement was made by President Sadyr Japarov during the General Debate of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
President Japarov highlighted the importance of a robust international security system to address the pressing global challenges and threats facing the world today. He underscored the UN Security Council's central role in this mechanism and emphasized the need to enhance its efficiency, fairness, and representativeness.
"The key element of this mechanism is the UN Security Council. Today it is more urgent than ever to improve the efficiency of its work to make this body fairer and more representative, to increase its ability to reach consensus in decision-making," President Japarov noted.
He further stressed the necessity of advancing negotiations on the reform of the UNSC and expressed Kyrgyzstan's commitment to contributing to global peace and security. Kyrgyzstan aims to do so by actively participating in effective peacebuilding efforts, upholding human rights, and promoting the equal involvement of women in peace processes. The country also seeks to protect the interests of developing nations, small states, and least developed and small island countries.
In his address, President Japarov emphasized the importance of fostering trust, solidarity, and universality in international relations. He argued that adhering to these principles is essential for rebuilding the global and regional security architecture.
Kyrgyzstan's decision to run for non-permanent membership in the UNSC demonstrates its commitment to playing a proactive role in addressing global security challenges and advancing the principles of multilateral diplomacy. If elected, Kyrgyzstan will join the rotating group of non-permanent members of the UNSC, contributing to important decisions on matters of international peace and security.
The announcement has already garnered support from several UN member states, who recognize Kyrgyzstan's dedication to upholding the values and goals of the United Nations. The election for non-permanent UNSC membership for the 2027-2028 term will take place in the coming years, and Kyrgyzstan's candidacy is expected to be met with keen interest and scrutiny from the international community.
