The Balkan shipyard in the port of Turkmenbashi is planning to build two dry cargo ships, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed a decree to this effect "in order to improve the material and technical base of the national transport industry".
Experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan last year received $135mn in loans from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Fund for International Development.
The flagship of the local shipbuilding industry was built by Turkish company Gap Inşaat in 2018. The plant capacity allows it to build up to six ships annually, including oil tankers, offshore platforms, trailers, and boats.
In the prospect, it is planned to build ships of various classes and types. Among them are RO-RO ferries for transporting wheeled vehicles (cars, trucks, trailers and wagons).
Turkmenbashi port has optimal opportunities for delivery of cargoes arriving along the route of the Great Silk Road from Asia and the Pacific Ocean, further to European countries through the ports of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran.
