Chinese technology firm Baidu has declared that its chatbot, ERNIE Bot, will be fully accessible to the general public starting from August 31.
According to an official statement released on the company's WeChat social media account, ERNIE Bot is now "completely open to the public," and individuals can interact with the bot through the official website or by downloading the mobile app.
The ERNIE Bot, similar in function to ChatGPT, utilizes a four-tier artificial intelligence architecture designed for deep cross-language semantic understanding and text generation. Baidu initially announced the project on February 7, and following internal testing, ERNIE Bot was formally launched on March 16th. The bot is built upon a deep learning platform and has the capacity to acquire insights from extensive datasets.
For individuals to access the bot, they are required to register, input authentic names, and provide genuine identity credentials for citizens of the People's Republic of China. This move aligns with China's regulatory efforts regarding generative artificial intelligence content, which were put into effect on August 15th. These regulations stipulate that AI-generated content must uphold socialist values, not compromise national security, and avoid disseminating propaganda, terrorism, violence, pornography, false information, or harmful content.
ChatGPT, a well-known chatbot, achieved substantial popularity after its launch towards the end of the prior year, amassing over one million users within a week. The conversational simulation it offers has prompted discussions regarding its potential impact on professional writers and its implications for Google's primary search business. ChatGPT is a product of OpenAI, a company co-founded by Elon Musk.
