In a Historic Milestone, Moscow Zoo Announces the Birth of the First Giant Panda Cub in Russia
Moscow Zoo, one of the oldest zoos in Russia, has proudly announced the birth of the first-ever giant panda cub in the country. The new cub, whose gender has yet to be determined, weighs 150 grams and was born to parents Ru Yi and Ding Ding.
A Young Couple's Success
Both pandas are relatively young: Ru Yi is seven years old, and Ding Ding is six. Pandas typically have their first cub between the ages of eight and ten. The early success of this young couple is attributed to the meticulous planning and monitoring by zoo staff and visiting experts from China.
Close Monitoring and Medical Tests
"Mother and cub are being kept under close monitoring, around the clock, and are undergoing all necessary (medical) tests," said Svetlana Akulova, head of the Moscow Zoo, in a recent statement.
The momentous occasion was captured on video, showing various scenes of Ding Ding nursing, cleaning, and holding the newborn cub.
Diplomatic Relations and Panda Diplomacy
The arrival of Ru Yi and Ding Ding in Moscow back in 2019 was symbolic, marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and China. The event had even been graced by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, both of whom watched the pandas during their visit to the Moscow Zoo.
A Collaboration with Chinese Experts
Given the notorious difficulty in breeding pandas, a Chinese expert on panda breeding was invited to Moscow to control and monitor the mating process. The adult pandas were brought together this spring, and the resulting birth is being hailed as a great success and a testament to international collaboration.
A Historic Event
The birth of the panda cub is seen as a monumental achievement for Moscow Zoo and a great success in the realm of panda breeding. It has captured the attention of panda enthusiasts around the world, turning all eyes toward Moscow Zoo as they continue to monitor the health and well-being of the newborn and its mother, Ding Ding.
