The Ministry of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy has formally requested the Ministry of Digital Development to impose a block on TikTok within Kyrgyzstan.
The department's press service released a statement indicating that the growing frequency of concerns expressed by several non-governmental organizations regarding the detrimental impact of the social media platform TikTok on children's mental development and well-being has prompted this action.
The statement highlights that TikTok engrosses users in a virtual realm of brief video clips, leading teenagers to attempt to replicate certain videos, some of which involve life-threatening activities. Additionally, as the psychological state of children is still in the process of forming, the content on TikTok, fostering dependency, detrimentally influences the emotional well-being of the younger population.
In light of these concerns, the Ministry of Culture conducted content analysis and determined that the platform lacks sufficient restrictions to prevent access to information that could be harmful to children's health and development. Furthermore, there is no feature on the TikTok application to control the age category when accessing information.
Based on the numerous appeals received and the findings of the content analysis, the Ministry of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy has decided to halt the distribution of the TikTok service within the Kyrgyz Republic. The decision has been forwarded to the Ministry of Digital Development for implementation in compliance with the country's legal framework.
